Week of Sept. 27th

Hello Parents!

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend.  I enjoyed seeing some of you at our Fall Festival this Friday =)

This week we will be picking up the pace a little bit in kindergarten.  We have already studied the letters P, B, and T.  This week we will be focusing on the letter D.  Try to find some objects that start with D around your home with your child!

We will be starting a unit on Fall this week also.  The new season brings lots of fun and exciting things for our students to observe.  We will be focusing on the changes in the weather and how that affects us.  For example, we start wearing different clothes; we may play different sports; we may eat some different foods, etc.  The season also is full of beautiful COLORS.  We will be watching the leaves change and sorting them by color and shape.  Some of the color words are kindergarten high frequency words that the students need to master by the end of the year (black, blue, brown, green, orange, red, white, yellow).  You can find a list of these words on our classroom website under the Classroom Documents tab.  We work with these words a lot inside the classroom, but as always, extra practice at home will help our students master them all.

We are continuing to work on recognizing numbers (both numeric and written: 2/two) along with their values.  By the end of the quarter, the students need to be able to recognize the numbers 0-10 and match up quantities with the number (ex: five pom-poms go with #5).  Simple activities could be completed at home to help reinforce these skills.  While eating dinner, you could ask your child to eat 10 veggies.  You could have them help you fold 3 shirts.  While coloring, they may only be able to use 6 crayons.  There are lots of simple ways to help reinforce what we do in school at home!  If you are ever looking for suggestions, don't hesitate to contact me!

Thank you to all of you that have sent in snack for the class.  The kids have really been enjoying the goodies!  I will be creating a new calendar for October and will get that out to you guys this week.  For those of you that have not sent in snack yet, some of the popular options have been goldfish, bananas, and pretzels!  Those are just suggestions, feel free to send in other things as well =)

Schedule update:  I have changed our schedule slightly.  I will post the new schedule on the website.  I have moved our snack to right after specials (9:10).  The kids were very hungry and this time seems to work better for us.  If you bring in snack after school has started, please note the new time!

Thanks =)

Welcome!

A new year in The Cohn Shoppe is underway!  We have a wonderful group of 25 children that are as excited about the new year as I am.  We have worked hard to learn everyone's names over the first week of school.  We have also brushed up on our ABC's and have been counting up a storm!  If you would like to work with your child on writing capital and lowercase letters at home, that would be a great help!  We will be spending a week on each letter as the year unfolds, but extra practice is always beneficial!

Check back later for a detailed description of what this next week has in store for us!
